The Art of Mindfulness

By Carol Rios BCH MH EFT

Practicing the Art of Mindfulness is the way to tranquility because it brings us into the moment. We can be mindful during any task. The Far East and many cultures around the world have practiced the art of meditation and mindfulness while walking, eating and working. It is a lack of appreciation for where we are at any single moment to allow our thoughts to wander off into the future or the past. When we are not present the power within the moment escapes us and we miss the opportunity to embrace tranquility and peace. If we can become present enough to allow all of our attention to be focused on what is in this moment now, we find that the future and the past melt into this moment. All of time becomes one and you become empowered by the moment and all that is contained within it. How empowering to be in touch with all of time. For all those who think it is a waste of time to focus on the trivial tasks of this little moment now are missing the point. The secret is, this moment now is all there is!  There is nothing else because tomorrow never comes without becoming now. If we want tomorrow to be a better now than the one we feel we are having, then experience what is happening now as the greatest freedom, peace, love, joy, riches, you can have. This is how we transform the now into something beautiful, freeing and healing.

Many people have found that mindfulness can increase life enjoyment, improve the ability to cope with illness, and improve physical and emotional health. The February 2004 issue of Harvard Women’s Health Watch looked at how learning to focus the mind can help you manage the stresses of everyday living.

Mindfulness consists of paying attention to an experience from moment to moment — without drifting into thoughts of the past or concerns about the future, or getting caught up in "thoughts" or opinions about what’s going on. An easy way to practice mindfulness is through meditation, which involves sitting or lying down quietly for 20 or 30 minutes, once or twice a day.

  • Pay attention to your breathing or your environment when you stop at red lights.
  • Before you go to sleep, and when you awaken, take some “mindful” breaths.
  • Instead of allowing your mind to wander over the day’s concerns, direct your attention to your breathing.
  • Find a task that you do impatiently or unconsciously (standing in line or brushing your teeth, for example) and concentrate on the experience.
  • Make something that occurs several times during a day, such as answering the phone or buckling your seatbelt, a reminder to return to the present — that is, think about what you’re doing and observe yourself doing it.

EFT is a very flexible improvement tool that can be used for just about everything. I am using my version here and have had quite extraordinary results. If your licensed medical practitioner has diagnosed your problem, you may be required to bring your physician's referral for treatment according to their specifications.

For Self Hypnosis Recordings: Listening in the evening before bed is recommended the best time, as the critical mind factor is less likely to interfere with the suggestions offered.
